Short answer: Most store-bought produce washes are plant-derived surfactant blends — similar in function to a mild dish soap — and because they don't make pesticide-killing claims, they generally aren't required to prove they outperform plain water. Independent reviews from EWG and Consumer Reports have tested water, baking soda, and vinegar against pesticide residue; none of the major studies we could find tested a commercial produce wash brand head-to-head. That's not the same as "unsafe" — it's closer to "untested," which is a different problem.
What's actually in the bottle
Ingredient lists vary by brand, but the pattern is consistent. Veggie Wash lists water, glycerin, plant-based fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic), potassium hydroxide, decyl and lauryl glucoside (plant-derived surfactants), citrus oils for cleaning and scent, and potassium sorbate as a preservative. Fit Organic lists purified water, organic sunflower oil, organic ethyl alcohol, organic glycerin, potassium hydroxide, and organic grapefruit oil.
In plain terms: these are surfactants — compounds that help water lift oil-based residue off a surface, the same basic chemistry as dish soap, just formulated from plant oils instead of petroleum. That's not inherently a problem. But it means the core selling point of most produce washes is "helps water do its job better," not a distinct chemical process that breaks down pesticide residue the way an acid or alkaline solution does.
How they're actually regulated
The EPA only regulates a cleaning product as a pesticide under FIFRA if it specifically claims to kill, repel, or prevent a pest, or remove pest-related material. A bottle that says "removes pesticide residue" without claiming to kill anything typically doesn't trigger that classification. The practical result: most produce washes sit outside both FIFRA pesticide registration and any mandated efficacy testing regime. A brand can market a wash as more effective than water without being required to prove it to a regulator before selling it.
What the independent research actually tested
- EWG-funded peer-reviewed review (2026): 47 studies, 23 produce items, 79 pesticides. Tested water rinse (30.2% median reduction), water soak (33.7%), baking soda soak (50.9%), and vinegar soak (54.2%). No commercial produce wash brand was included in the review.
- Consumer Reports, citing a University of Massachusetts study (2017): a baking soda soak outperformed both a bleach wash and plain tap water on apples, with full removal of some residues taking 12–15 minutes of soaking. Again, no commercial wash brand was tested.
- ConsumerLab.com reviewed the space and noted that manufacturers claim their washes outperform water, but "in many cases studies to back these claims are not available on the companies' websites."
None of this means commercial produce washes don't work. It means the actual head-to-head comparison — a specific bottled wash versus plain water versus a baking soda or vinegar soak — doesn't appear to have been independently published. The research that does exist keeps landing on the same two things: plain acid or alkaline chemistry (vinegar, baking soda) and running water with agitation.
Where this leaves you
If you want a produce wash, the honest question to ask is what's actually reducing residue — a surfactant helping water rinse things away, or a measured acid/alkaline reaction the way the tested methods above work. A food-grade tablet built on sodium bicarbonate and citric acid gives you the same chemistry the independent studies found effective, in a fixed, repeatable dose — not a proprietary surfactant blend with no published head-to-head data behind it. What we can say is which chemistry the research actually supports, and build around that instead of a fragrance-and-surfactant formula asking you to take its word for it.
